Thursday the Dow closed up +153.30 (+0.47%) at 33,061.57.

The Dow stock losers Thursday were led by Salesforce (CRM) 212.90 (-4.69%), Amgen (AMGN) 214.27 (-2.89%) and Goldman Sachs (GS) 316.40 (-2.32%).

The VIX closed Thursday at 15.65 (-12.76%) and the 10 YR at 3.606 (+0.17%). The VIX is currently at 15.17 (-3.07%). The 10YR is at 3.62 (+0.75%).

Nonfarm payrolls grew much more than expected in May, rising 339,000 despite economists polled by Dow Jones expecting a relatively modest 190,000 increase. It marked the 29th straight month of positive job growth. Recent strong jobs report have pressured stocks on the notion that the resilient labor market will keep the Federal Reserve in hiking mode. But the stock market seemed to like Friday’s numbers, perhaps concentrating on a wage increase that showed lighter-than-expected inflation and an unemployment rate that ticked higher. Average hourly earnings increased by 4.3% year-over-year, compared to a 4.4% estimate from Dow Jones. The unemployment rate climbed back to 3.7% from 3.4%.

The Senate passed a bill Thursday night to raise the debt ceiling, sending it to President Joe Biden’s desk. He is expected to sign the legislation Friday, preventing what would have been the first-ever U.S. sovereign debt default. The House-approved compromise bill passed the Senate by a 63-36 margin, garnering sufficient bipartisan support to overcome the chamber’s 60-vote threshold to avoid a filibuster.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down seven-tenths of a cent at $3.567 per gallon.
