We have a lot of earnings this week (see earnmings section below) as they look ahead to next week’s policy-setting Federal Reserve meeting. The consensus points to the Fed raising rates by a quarter of a point, which is lower than recent increases, but markets will be tuned in especially to what Chairman Jerome Powell says about the central bank’s next steps.
No speeches from Fed officials are on the calendar ahead of the central bank policy meeting on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Investors, however, will monitor another batch of economic data, including the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, the personal consumption expenditure price index, due out Friday.
The rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee is set to convene Jan. 31-Feb. 1, with markets pricing in almost a 100% chance of a quarter-point increase in the central bank’s benchmark rate. Most prominently, Fed Governor Christopher Waller said Friday he sees a 0.25 percentage point increase as the preferred move for the upcoming meeting.
