The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +286 points.

Thursday the Dow closed down -339.69 (-1.02%) at 32,930.08.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -0.66%.

The Dow stock winners Thursday were led by Chevron (CVX) 175.24 (+1.80%), Merck (MRK) 113.64 (+1.39%) and Verizon (VZ) 41.70 (+1.39%).

The Dow stock losers Thursday were led by Walgreens (WBA) 35.19 (-6.13%), Microsoft (MSFT) 222.31 (-2.96%) and UnitedHealth (UNH) 489.96 (-2.88%).

The 10 YR yield closed Thursday at 3.724 (+0.13%) and the VIX at 22.46 (+2.04%). The 10 YR is currently at 3.705 and VIX is at 22.98 (-2.14%).

Wall Street is eyeing more data Friday that suggests a still-hot labor market and, potentially, more action by the Federal Reserve to bring down inflation. Stocks sold off Thursday after a better-than-expected private sector jobs report, with the Dow falling 300 points. All three major indexes are on their way to a losing week to start the new year.

The December jobs report from the Labor Department came in at 223,000 jobs added. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected to see growth of 200,000 in nonfarm payrolls and an unemployment rate holding steady at 3.7%. On Thursday, private payrolls came in better than expected, rising by 235,000 jobs, according to a report from ADP. Wall Street had expected private payroll adds of 153,000.

The House adjourned for a third night on Thursday without a speaker, after GOP leader Kevin McCarthy was defeated in an 11th vote. It’s the longest the chamber has gone without a leader in generations. The House is now facing a 12th vote when it reconvenes at noon on Friday, while McCarthy scrambles to appease far-right Republicans who have withheld their support for his speakership.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up five-tenths of a cent at $3.290 per gallon.
