October was a volatile but ultimately successful time for stocks. The Dow rose nearly 14%, the composite’s best month since January 1976.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to raise its benchmark interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point for the fourth meeting in a row on Wednesday after two days of Federal Open Market Committee meetings. Then markets expect the central bank to come off its hawkish stance to lower inflation and slow down the pace of rate hikes unless data continues to show stubbornly hot inflation.

Homebuilders who thrived during the earlier days of the Covid pandemic are now experiencing a suddenly cooler market, due to skyrocketing mortgage rates. Home prices have already cooled, sellers have become more reluctant to part ways with their low rates, and buyers are spooked by high prices and surging rates.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down four-tenths of a cent at $3.758 per gallon.
