The Dow stock losers Monday were Amgen (AMGN) 237.63 (-4.07%), Home Depot (HD) 297.54 (-0.74%) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 165.64 (-0.04%).

The 10 YR yield is currently at 3.440% and the VIX is at 24.98 (+4.65%).

U.S. stock futures fell after the highly anticipated inflation data release. The consumer price index for August rose slightly on a month to month basis in August. Analysts had expected price increases to slow down last month, particularly as fuel prices fell. The report comes ahead of next week’s Federal Reserve meeting, at which the central bankers will decide how much further they’ll raise rates. By now, a three-quarter-point is effectively baked in, but Tuesday’s data could alter expectations about what’s next.

The consumer price index, which tracks a broad swath of goods and services, increased 0.1% for the month and 8.3% over the past year. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, CPI rose 0.6% from July and 6.3% from the same month in 2021. Economists had been expecting headline inflation to fall 0.1% and core to increase 0.3%. The respective year-over-year forecasts were for 8% and 6% gains.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down nine-tenths of a cent at $3.707 per gallon.
