The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Salesforce (CRM) 182.24 (-3.96%), Nike (NKE) 110.11 (-3.41%) and Intel (INTC) 34.52 (-2.43%).

The 10 YR yield is currently at 2.762% and the VIX is at 20.74 (-4.73%).

The rate of inflation slowed last month as gas prices eased. The consumer price index rose at a year-over-year rate of 8.5%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists had expected the year-over-year figure to show 8.7% growth, versus the 9.1% yearly increase in June. Month to month, the CPI didn’t change at all, while economists had projected 0.2% growth. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core CPI rose 5.9% annually and 0.3% monthly, compared to respective estimates of 6.1% and 0.5%. Despite the slowing rate, inflation is still high, and the Fed is still likely on track for another rate hike at its September meeting following back-to-back increases of three-quarters of a point.

Fed officials scheduled to speak Wednesday include Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Charles Evans at 11:00 am ET in Des Moines and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari will talk later during a panel about stagflation at the Aspen Economic Strategy Group.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is down 2.3 cents at $4.010 per gallon.
