The Dow stock losers Friday were led by Caterpillar (CAT) 201.16 (-5.19%), 3M (MMM) 163.10 (-4.15%) and Chevron (CVX) 130.61 (-3.52%).

Dow futures are lower heading into the final trading day of January.

The Dow is tracking for its worst month since October 2020.

The government this coming Friday is set to release its latest employment report. While economists expect 178,000 nonfarm payrolls were added last month, there are questions about how the spread of the Covid omicron variant may impact the numbers.

With oil prices trading around seven-year highs against the backdrop of political tensions in Eastern Europe, Biden is set to meet at the White House on Monday with the ruling leader of oil-rich nation Qatar. Biden hopes Qatar, who aided in last summer’s U.S. military evacuations in Afghanistan, will once again help the West as it faces the prospect of a European energy crunch if Russia invades Ukraine. The White House said Biden and Qatar’s leader would also use Monday’s meeting to discuss the Middle East, the situation in Afghanistan and U.S. efforts to resurrect the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

U.S. futures are mostly lower, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up three-tenths of a cent at $3.366 per gallon.
