Friday the Dow closed down -74.73 (-0.21%) at 35,369.09.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +15.56%.

The Dow stock winners Friday were led by Salesforce (CRM) 267.08 (+1.11%), Home Depot (HD) 330.34 (+0.79%) and Walmart (WMT) 149.25 (+0.46%).

The Dow stock losers Friday were led by American Express (AXP) 159.30 (-1.70%), Boeing (BA) 218.17 (-1.20%)A and Honeywell (HON) 228.36 (-1.13%).

The U.S. stock market was closed Monday for Labor Day.

Over the weekend, Goldman Sachs downgraded its estimate for U.S. economic growth to a 5.7% annual rate in 2021, below the 6.2% consensus.

Total Covid cases in America topped 40 million over the holiday weekend and White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said the U.S. will likely start to widely distribute Pfizer vaccine booster shots during the week of Sept. 20. The Biden administration has announced plans to offer third doses to people who received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, pending approval from public health officials. The U.S. recommends an additional shot eight months after the second dose. However, Fauci said only Pfizer may get FDA and CDC approval in time for the rollout.

US futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down two-tenths of a cent at $3.186 per gallon.
