DJIA Market Happenings For Monday, August 30, 2021 – Microsoft (MSFT) +34.75% YTD

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +29 points.

Friday the Dow closed up +242.68 (+0.69%) at 35,455.80.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +15.84%.

The Dow stock winners Friday were led by Dow (DOW) 65.38 (+2.72%), Boeing (BA) 221.75 (+2.42%) and Disney (DIS) 180.14 (+2.03%).

The Dow stock losers Friday were led by Walmart (WMT) 146.52 (-0.56%), Salesforce (CRM) 266.53 (-0.47%) and Merck (MRK) 76.30 (-0.35%).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average’s rally brought it to within 0.5% of its record close on Aug. 16. Stocks rallied Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signaled that central bankers are in no rush to raise interest rates. He said decision-making on rate hikes is on a different track than tapering bond purchases, which he acknowledged could start this year. With two days left in August, the Dow was up nearly 1.5%.

The government’s latest monthly employment report is set for release on Friday. While saying the Fed has seen sufficient progress on inflation, Powell said the labor market has not yet improved enough to start the tapering. Economists expect 750,000 nonfarm jobs were created in August, with the nation’s unemployment rate falling to 5.2%. The economy in July created 943,000 positions, and the jobless rate slid to 5.4%. Bond yields were steady early Monday, with the 10-year Treasury just above 1.3%.

The seven-day average of new daily Covid cases in the U.S. rose 5% to 155,277 as of Sunday. Over than same period, daily Covid deaths averaged 1,290, an increase of 29% over the prior week, fanned by the delta variant.

US futures are higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up three-tenths of a cent at $3.151 per gallon.
