The U.S. economy added 661,000 jobs in September, and unemployment fell to 7.9%. Job growth slowed further in September, as fading government support and the failure to contain the coronavirus threatened to short-circuit the once-promising economic recovery. Employers brought back 661,000 jobs in September, the Labor Department said Friday. That is down from 1.5 million in August, and far below the 4.8 million jobs added in June. The unemployment rate fell to 7.9 percent. This is the latest sign that the recovery is losing steam.
European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is up one-tenth of a cent at $2.192 per gallon.
