DJIA Market Happenings For Thursday, July 16, 2020

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by UnitedHealth (UNH) 304.07 (-1.44%), Verizon (VZ) 55.06 (-0.69% and Procter & Gamble (PG) 124.50 (-0.47%).

Unemployment insurance weekly claims in the week ending July 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 1,300,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 4,000 from 1,314,000 to 1,310,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,375,000, a decrease of 60,000 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 2,250 from 1,437,250 to 1,435,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 11.9 percent for the week ending July 4, a decrease of 0.3 percentage point from the previous week’s revised rate. The previous week’s rate was revised down by 0.2 from 12.4 to 12.2 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 4 was 17,338,000, a decrease of 422,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 302,000 from 18,062,000 to 17,760,000. The 4-week moving average was 18,272,250, a decrease of 737,750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 75,500 from 19,085,500 to 19,010,000.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) reported adjusted earnings of $1.67 a share on $18.34 billion in sales for its second quarter. In premarket trading, JNJ stock edged higher. On average, analysts called for Johnson & Johnson earnings of $1.496 per share on $17.57 billion in sales. In the year-earlier period, J&J earned $2.58 a share on $20.56 billion in sales. For the year, the company slightly raised guidance to adjusted EPS of $7.75 – $7.95 on revenue of $79.9 billion to $81.4 billion. Analysts called for Johnson & Johnson earnings of $7.73 per share and $80.29 billion in sales.

European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up two-tenths of a cent at $2.201 per gallon.
