The Dow stock winners Thursday were led by Pfizer (PFE) +2.06%, Merck (MRK) +1.92% and Procter & Gamble (PG) +1.91%.
The Dow stock losers Thursday were Goldman Sachs (GS) -4.03%, Disney (DIS) -3.93% and Chevron (CVX) -3.23%.
The economy is reopening. But the job cuts keep coming. The US government said Thursday that another 2.1 million people filed initial jobless claims last week, bringing the total number of Americans who have filed for first-time unemployment benefits since mid-March to more than 40 million. Boeing (BA) laid off 6,770 workers this week, part of a plan to reduce 16,000 total jobs because of the rapid decline in air traffic.
European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is up four-tenths of a cent at $1.972 per gallon.
