The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +211 points.

Monday the Dow was up +358.51 (+1.51%) at 24,133.78.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -15.43%.

The Dow stock winners Monday were led by Disney (DIS) +4.81%, 3M (MMM) +4.52% and JPMorgan (JPM) +4.31%.

The Dow stock losers Monday were Procter & Gamble (PG) -1.12%, Walmart (WMT) -0.88% and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) -0.37%.

Boeing (BA) will resume production of its 787 Dreamliner aircraft at its South Carolina factory on May 4. It had suspended production on April 8 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and plans to institute a series of safeguards at the factory before workers return.

3M (MMM) reported quarterly earnings of $2.16 per share, beating the consensus estimate of $2.03 a share. The health-care and safety products maker’s revenue also beat forecasts, but the company withdrew its full-year outlook due to virus-related uncertainties.

Caterpillar (CAT) missed earnings forecasts by 9 cents a share, with quarterly earnings of $1.60 per share. Revenue fell short of estimates as well amid a slowdown in demand. As many other companies have done, Caterpillar is not providing any full-year 2020 guidance due to uncertainties surrounding the pandemic.

Merck (MRK) earnings came in 16 cents a share ahead of estimates, with quarterly profit of $1.50 per share. The drugmaker’s revenue also topped Wall Street forecasts. Merck’s results were helped by strong sales of its Keytruda cancer drug, but it cut its 2020 forecast due to coronavirus-related uncertainties.

Pfizer (PFE) earned 80 cents per share for the first quarter, 7 cents a share better than consensus. Revenue also beat forecasts and Pfizer reaffirmed its full-year financial outlook. A drop in sales of off-patent pain drug Lyrica contributed to a more than 12% drop in profit compared to a year ago.

Verizon (VZ) is one of several wireless service providers who have agreed to extend customer concessions through June 30, and will not cancel service or charge late fees to customers impacted by the pandemic.

European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down three-tenths of a cent at $1.774 per gallon.

Procter & Gamble (PG) reported earnings on 4/17/20 before the market open of $1.22, beating estimates calling for $1.106 per share

IBM (IBM) reported earnings on 4/20/2020 after the market close of $1.84, beating estimates calling for $1.698 per share.

Coca Cola (KO) reported earnings on 4/21/20 before the market open of $0.51, beating estimates calling for $0.436 per share.

Travelers (TRV) reported earnings on 4/21/20 before the market open of $2.62, missing estimates calling for $2.877 per share.

Intel (INTC) reported earnings on 4/23/2020 after the market close of $1.45, beating estimates calling for $1.281 per share.

American Express (AXP) reported earnings on 4/24/20 before the market open of $1.98, beating estimates calling for $1.686 per share.
