The Dow Market Happenings For Tuesday, March 17, 2020

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +102 points.

Monday the Dow was down -2997.10 (-12.93%) at 20,188.52.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -29.26%.

There were zero Dow stocks up Monday.

The Dow stock winners Monday were not to be found. Monday was a real market collapse with a circuit breaker halt at the open.

The Dow stock losers Monday were led by Boeing (BA) -3.85%, Travelers (TRV) -20.80%, Home Depot (HD) -19.79%, Intel (INTC) -18.04%, UnitedHealth (UNH) -17.28%, Chevron (CVX) -16.45% and McDonald’s (MCD) -15.88%.

The two-day Fed FOMC meeting begins today.

Financial markets cratered on Monday, as investors were confronted with evidence that a steep decline in the world’s largest economies may have already begun. The sell-off began after the Federal Reserve took extraordinary steps on Sunday afternoon to bolster the American economy, signaling that it saw an economic crisis unfolding as businesses shut down and borders are closed in order to contain the coronavirus.

McDonald’s (MCD) announced late Monday it would close dining rooms at company-owned restaurants in accordance with efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Drive through, take out and delivery operations would remain open. The company asked franchise owners to do the same.

European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down 2 cents at $2.237 per gallon.
