China reported more than 5,000 new cases of the coronavirus, now named Covid-19, on Friday. That brought the total number of infected persons to 63,851, up 103% from a week earlier. Another 121 persons died from the virus, bringing the death toll to 1,380, 117% above week-ago levels. Globally, 6,768 persons are reported to have recovered from infections. Those antibodies had shown “significant results” in treating infected patients, according to the South China Morning Post. The number of deaths from the virus outside China rose to three on Thursday, as one person died in Japan. Japan has reported 254 cases of the virus, the largest number outside of mainland China. Some 218 of those infected persons are passengers aboard Carnival’s (CCL) Diamond Princess, which is quarantined offshore from Yokohama.
