The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by JPMorgan (JPM) -1.50%, 3M (MMM) -0.88% and Intel (INTC) -0.82%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 29,000 for the first time Wednesday. The S&P 500 also closed at a new high, gaining 0.2% to end at 3,289, while the Nasdaq held steady at 9,258. The gains came as the US and China signed a deal aimed at easing tensions between the two economic giants.
UnitedHealth (UNH) reported strong Q4 earnings Wednesday before the opening bell, easily beating EPS views. The nation’s largest health insurer reported earnings of $3.90 a share, up 19% vs. a year earlier, on revenue of $60.2 billion. Revenue slightly missed analysts’ consensus estimate of a 4.4% bump up to $60.98 billion.
The Nike (NKE) Vaporfly shoe reportedly is set to be banned by World Athletics, amid allegations that it gives an unfair advantage to runners. The shoe’s design is under review, with findings to be revealed later this month. The Vaporfly has been worn by both men and women in recent record-breaking marathon races.
Unemployment insurance weekly claims in the week ending January 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 204,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 214,000. The 4-week moving average was 216,250, a decrease of 7,750 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 224,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending January 4,
unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending January 4 was 1,767,000, a decrease of 37,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 1,000 from 1,803,000 to 1,804,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,755,500, an increase of 10,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 1,744,750 to 1,745,000.
European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is down four-tenths of a cent at $2.567 per gallon.
