The Dow and the broader stock market are on track to log another day of gains today after US and Chinese officials said they will resume trade talks. China’s Ministry of Commerce said Thursday that top U.S. and Chinese trade negotiators spoke by phone late Wednesday and agreed to meet in early October for another round of talks. The U.S. confirmed the call between China’s Liu He and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. But U.S. officials did not confirm the October timetable, saying only that talks would happen in the “coming weeks†in Washington.
Walmart (WMT) hits a record high after announcing major overhauls to its gun policies. It is up +24.43% year-to-date.
The Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates by another quarter point when it holds its next meeting in two weeks.
Unemployment insurance weekly claims in the week ending August 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 217,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up by 1,000 from 215,000 to 216,000. The 4-week moving average was 216,250, an increase of 1,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 214,500 to 214,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending August 24, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending August 24 was 1,662,000, a decrease of 39,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 3,000 from 1,698,000 to 1,701,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,691,750, a decrease of 6,250 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 750 from 1,697,250 to 1,698,000.
European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
