The Dow stock winners Tuesday were led by Nike (NKE) +4.69%, Dow (DOW) +4.11%, Apple (AAPL) +3.66%, Goldman Sachs (GS) +3.65% and IBM (IBM) +3.45%.
The lone Dow stock loser Tuesday was Verizon (VZ) -0.28%.
U.S. private employers added 27,000 jobs in May, well below economists’ expectations and the smallest monthly gain in more than nine years. Economists had forecast the ADP National Employment Report would show a gain of 180,000 jobs, with estimates ranging from 123,000 to 230,000. Private payroll gains in the month earlier were revised down to 271,000 from an originally reported 275,000 increase. May’s increase was the smallest since March 2010.
The Fed is open to cutting rates. “We are closely monitoring the implications of these developments for the US economic outlook and, as always, we will act as appropriate to sustain the expansion,” Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Tuesday of trade negotiations.
European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is down eight-tenths of a cent at $2.795 per gallon.
