Gross domestic product, the official scorecard for the economy, grew at a 3.1% annual pace in the first quarter, the government said Thursday. GDP was marked down from an initial 3.2% estimate.

Unemployment insurance weekly claims in the week ending May 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 215,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up by 1,000 from 211,000 to 212,000. The 4-week moving average was 216,750, a decrease of 3,750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 220,250 to 220,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending May 18, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 18 was 1,657,000, a decrease of 26,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 7,000 from 1,676,000 to 1,683,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,672,500, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 1,750 from 1,674,250 to 1,676,000.

European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up two-tenths of a cent at $2.820 per gallon.
