The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) -0.88% and Merck (MRK) -0.58%.
JPMorgan Chase (JPM +2.01%) gained 2% in after-hours trading after it aced the Fed’s stress tests and said it will buy back $19.4 billion of stock between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018, and raised its quarterly dividend to 56 cents a share from 50 cents effective Q3.
The Labor Department said weekly applications rose by 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 244,000. The less volatile four-week average fell 2,750 to 242,250. The number of people receiving unemployment benefit checks rose 11,835 to 1,828,688.
European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended higher.
The national average price of gasoline is down five-tenths of a cent at $2.242 per gallon.
