Initial jobless claims fell by 8,000 to 237,000 in the week of June 4 to June 10. The less-volatile four-week average of new claims rose by 1,000 to 243,000.
European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is down six-tenths of a cent at $2.324 per gallon.
