Jobless claims rose by 20,000 to 243,000 in the week ended March 4. The previous week filings fell by 19,000 to 223,000. The median forecast called for 238,000 claims last week. The four-week moving average increased to 236,500 last week from 234,250.

The national average price of gasoline is down two-tenths of a cent at $2.304 per gallon.
