Procter & Gamble (PG -0.51%) climbed 3% in after-hours trading after Trian Fund Management LP said it added the company to its investments in Q4.
The U.S. cost of living increased in January by the most since February 2013, led by higher costs for gasoline and other goods and services that indicate inflation is gathering momentum. The consumer-price index rose a larger-than-forecast 0.6 percent after a 0.3 percent gain in December. Compared with the same month last year, costs paid by Americans for goods and services rose 2.5 percent, the most since March 2012.
European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is up two-tenths of a cent at $2.284 per gallon.
