The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +98 points.

Thursday the Dow was down -6.03 (-0.03%) at 19,884.91.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +0.62%.

The Dow stock winners Thursday were led by Merck (MRK) +3.35% and Cisco (CSCO) +2.23%.

The Dow stock losers Thursday were led by Caterpillar (CAT) -1.41% and UnitedHealth (UNH) -1.20%.

Visa (V -0.17%) rose 3% in after-hours trading after it reported Q1 operating revenue of $4.5 billion, above consensus of $4.3 billion, and then was initiated with an ‘Outperform’ at RBC Capital Markets with a 12-month target price of $97.

Employers added 227,000 workers to their payrolls in January and average hourly earnings grew by only 0.1 percent. The official jobless rate rose slightly, to 4.8 percent, as more people returned to the work force. Monthly growth in wages, year-over-year was a disappointing 2.5 percent, after shooting up to 2.9 percent in December.

European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is unchanged at $2.277 per gallon.
