The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 22,000 to a seasonally adjusted 259,000 for the week ended Jan. 21. Claims for the prior week were revised to show 3,000 more applications received than previously reported.
European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended higher.
The national average price of gasoline is down four-tenths of a cent at $2.293 per gallon.
