Jobless claims declined by 10,000 to 265,000 in the week ended Dec. 24 from a six-month high in the prior period. The four-week average of claims, a less-volatile measure than the weekly figure, fell to 263,000 from 263,750 the prior week.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.3 cents at $2.303 per gallon.
