The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open down -2 points.

Wednesday the Dow was down -65.82 (-0.35%) at 18,481.48.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +6.06%.

The Dow stock winners Wednesday were led by Nike (NKE) +1.01% and Chevron (CVX) +0.51%.

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by UnitedHealth (UNH) -1.51% and Merck (MRK) -1.34%.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications for jobless claims slipped by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 261,000. The less volatile four-week average dropped by 1,250 to 264,000. Overall, the number of people receiving unemployment checks fell by 30,000 to 2.15 million, down 5 percent from a year earlier.

European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up nine-tenths of a cent at $2.198 per gallon.
