The US economy added 287,000 jobs in June, beating the 180,000 expected by economists. This was the biggest jump in payrolls in eight months. However the unemployment rate climbed to 4.9% from 4.7% in May. This was largely due to the 414,000 people who entered the US labor force, which brought the labor force participation rate up to 62.7% in June from 62.6% in May.
McDonald’s (MCD +0.24%) said it sees a Q2 pretax charge of $235 million, or 20 cents a share, on re-franchising and G&A programs along with the move of its corporate headquarters.
United Technologies’ (UTX +0.58%) Pratt Unit was awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy valued at $1.5 billion for 99 total engines for the Martin F-35 Lightning II aircraft.
European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended lower.
The national average price of gasoline is down six-tenths of a cent at $2.252 per gallon.
