Verizon (VZ) reached a series of tentative agreements with unions representing nearly 40,000 striking workers over the holiday weekend, retreating on some of the major points of contention, including pension cuts and greater flexibility to outsource work.

European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up one-tenth of a cent at $2.323 per gallon.
