Caterpillar (CAT +2.62%) is down over 3% in premarket trading after it lowered guidance on Q1 adjusted EPS to 65 cents-70 cents, below consensus of 95 cents.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 7,000 to a seasonally adjusted 265,000 for the week ended March 12, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week’s claims were revised to show 1,000 fewer applications received than previously reported.

European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up a 1.3 cents at $1.958 per gallon.
