Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +2 points.

Wednesday, the Dow closed up +212.88 (+1.23%) at 17,584.52.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -1.34%.

The Dow stock winners Wednesday included Home Depot (HD) +3.43% ad Wal-Mart (WMT) +2.65%.

Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by International Business Machines (IBM) -0.65% and Verizon (VZ) -0.65%.

Goldman Sachs (GS) was initiated with an ‘Outperform’ at Credit Suisse with a price target of $225.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) was initiated with an ‘Outperform’ at Credit Suisse with a price target of $75.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, adding to signs of a strengthening labor market. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits slipped by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 294,000 for the week ended Jan. 3, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists had forecast claims falling to 290,000 last week. The prior week’s data was unrevised.

European stocks are high and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down nine-tenths of a cent at $2.182 per gallon.
