Merck (MRK) acquires Idenix (IDIX) for $24.50 per share in cash or $3.85 billion.
The VIX is at a two year low.
European stocks were mostly higher and Asian markets ended higher.
The national average price of gasoline is down one-tenth of a cent at $3.653 per gallon.
