The Market

Premarket, the Dow was indicated to open down -162 points.

Thursday, the Dow closed up +109.82 (+0.70%) at 15,848.61.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -4.39%.

Chevron (CVX) reported diluted Q4 2013 earnings of $4.9 billion, $2.57 per share as compared with analyst expectations of $2.60. The year-ago Q4 2012 earnings were $7.2 billion, $3.70 per share, diluted.

U.S. consumer spending rose more than expected in December. The Commerce Department said today that consumer spending increased 0.4 percent after rising by a revised 0.6 percent in November. Economists had forecast consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, rising 0.2 percent last month.

Personal income was unchanged last month after rising 0.2 percent in November. Income continued to be held back by stagnant wage growth as the economy works through slack in the labor market.

European stocks are lower and Asian stocks were closed or ended lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up three-tenths of a cent to $3.278 per gallon.
