The Dow Market Happenings For Friday, December 20, 2013

Dow stocks at new 52 week highs include American Express (AXP), Dupont (DD), Disney (DIS), Goldman Sachs (GS), 3M (MMM) and Visa (V) There are no Dow stock 52 week lows.

The Market

Premarket, the Dow was indicated to open up +28 points.

Thursday, the Dow closed up +11.11 (+0.07%) at 16,179.08.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +23.47%.

The U.S. economy grew at a 4.1% annual rate in the third quarter, stronger than previously estimated, as new data shows consumer spending accelerated in the summer. The Commerce Department previously pegged the annual rate of growth at 3.6% in July through September. Todays estimate shows gross domestic product, the sum of all goods and services produced in the economy, expanded at the fastest pace since the fourth quarter of 2011 and the second-fastest since the recovery began in mid-2009. Economists had forecast a revised third-quarter growth pace of 3.6%.

Nike (NKE) reported Q2 EPS of 59 cents, better than consensus of 58 cents.

3M Company (MMM) was upgraded to ‘Neutral’ from ‘Underweight’ at JPMorgan.

Only five days till Christmas.

European stocks are mostly higher and Asian stocks ended mixed.

The national average price of gasoline is up one cent to $3.222 per gallon.

Nike (NKE) will report earnings today after the market close.

Earnings reports from Thursday include:

Nike, Inc. (NKE) reported second quarter EPS of $0.59 on revenue of $6.40 billion, compared to last year’s EPS of $0.57 on revenue of $5.96 billion.

Accenture plc. (ACN) reported first quarter EPS of $1.15 on revenue of $7.40 billion, compared to last year’s EPS of $1.06 on revenue of $7.22 billion.

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (DRI) reported second quarter EPS of $0.20 on revenue of $2.05 billion, compared to last year’s EPS of $0.26 on revenue of $1.96 billion.

Rite Aid Corporation (RAD) reported third quarter EPS of $0.04 on revenue of $6.40 billion, compared to last year’s EPS of $0.07 on revenue of $6.24 billion.

Other stocks expected to report earnings today include:

BlackBerry (BBRY) is expected to report a third quarter loss of $0.43 per share on revenue of $1.58 billion, compared to last year’s loss of $0.22 on revenue of $5.96 billion.

Navistar International Corporation (NAV) is expected to report a fourth quarter loss of $1.67 per share on revenue of $2.92 billion, compared to last year’s loss of $7.89 on revenue of $3.28 billion.

Walgreen Co. (WAG) is expected to report first quarter EPS of $0.73 on revenue of $18.33 billion, compared to last year’s EPS of $0.58 on revenue of $17.32 billion.
