The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose slightly last week but is still near its lowest level since before the 2007-09 recession. The Labor Department reported initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose by 5,000 last week to 333,000. Economists had expected first-time applications to rise to 336,000 last week.
McDonald’s Corp. (MCD) said that in July global sales rose 0.7 percent at restaurants open at least 13 months. That included a 1.6 percent increase in the U.S., where it said breakfast and staples such as the Big Mac helped lift results. The figure fell 1.9 percent in both Europe and the region encompassing Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) disclosed on Wednesday that it faced a criminal and civil investigation into whether it sold shoddy mortgage securities to investors in the run-up to the financial crisis.
European markets are higher and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is down 1.1 cents to $3.589 per gallon.
