UnitedHealth and Verizon Report Earnings

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH) reported a bigger-than-expected rise in second-quarter net income as it enrolled more people in private and government-paid health insurance plans and sold more health technology systems.

UnitedHealth reported net income of $1.44 billion, or $1.40 per share, compared with $1.34 billion, or $1.27 per share, a year earlier. Analysts on average had expected earnings of $1.25 per share. Revenue rose to $30.4 billion with analysts expecting $30.5 billion.

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) added more wireless devices than expected to its network in the latest quarter, continuing a strong run for the country’s largest cellphone carrier.

Net income for Verizon Communications Inc. was $5.2 billion, or 78 cents per share, up 21 percent from a year ago. Excluding a pension-related gain, earnings were 73 cents per share. That beat the average estimate of analysts by a penny. Revenue was $29.79 billion, up more than 4 percent from a year ago and in line with analyst expectations.
