Dow and S&P 500 at 5 Year Highs: DJIA Market Close For Tuesday, January 22, 2013

The Dow closed up +62.51 (+0.46%) at 13,712.21, hitting a 5 year high. We now have less than 300 points to reach Dow 14,000.

Dow stock leaders were many today and led by UNH (+2.68%), AA (+2.22%), TRV (+2.15%), BAC (+1.89%), DD (+1.77%) and VZ (+0.94%).

Dow stock losers, eight of them. were KO (-1.51%), BA (-1.17%), JNJ (-0.74%), CSCO, AXP, INTC, MSFT and GE.

DD,VZ,TRV and JNJ all reported earnings today. Looks as though the market liked JNJ the least.

Travelers (TRV) was among the best performers on the Dow, with shares rising more than 2% after the company’s fourth-quarter profit beat estimates. Shares of DuPont (DD) also rose sharply after the company reported better-than-expected earnings and issued an upbeat outlook.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) shares were lower after the company reported earnings and sales that were roughly in line with estimates.

Verizon (VZ) reported a wider quarterly loss ahead of the open, but shares managed to gain ground.

IBM (IBM) climbed in after-hours as the company topped fourth-quarter earnings and sales expectations and also issued a better-than-expected outlook for 2013.

International Business Machines Corp. net income increased 11.11% to $6.1 billion ($5.39 per diluted share) in the quarter versus a net gain of $5.49 billion in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue decreased 0.63% to $29.3 billion from the year-earlier quarter. IBM beat the mean analyst estimate of $5.25 and also beat the average revenue estimate of $29.09 billion.

Microsoft (MSFT) is reported to be in talks with private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and Dell CEO Michael Dell to invest between $1 billion to $3 billion in the buyout of Dell.
