The dollar was down against the euro and British pound but was up a bit versus the Japanese yen.
Oil for December delivery added $3.06 to $88.71 a barrel.
Gold futures for December delivery jumped $31.80 to $1,715.00 an ounce.
The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury was down, pushing the yield up to 1.75% from 1.68% late Monday.
