The Dow closed up +26.34 (+0.20%) at 13,103.68. Thank God this week is about over. I hope we just need to get past elections.
Procter & Gamble (PG) was the biggest gainer on the Dow after it reported mixed quarterly earnings, but maintained its outlook for the full year.
First-time claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, to 369,000. Reports on durable goods and pending home sales in September also came in above expectations.
Apple and Amazon both delivered weak earnings reports.
The dollar was down against the euro and British pound, but gained against the Japanese yen.
Oil for December delivery added 32 cents to settle at $86.05 a barrel.
Gold futures for December delivery gained $11.40 to settle at $1,713 an ounce.
The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury was down, pushing the yield up to 1.83% from 1.78% late Wednesday.
