The Dow closed down -115.30 (-0.88%) at 13,067.46.
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) was the biggest loser, dropping more than 8%. The tech firm delivered disappointing sales and revenue forecasts after the close yesterday.
The Census Bureau reported new home sales rose 3.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 372,000 in July. Better than the 368,000 economists had expected.
The dollar was down against the euro and Japanese yen, but was up against the British pound.
Oil for October delivery slipped 99 cents to $96.27 a barrel.
Gold futures for December delivery jumped $32.30 to $1,672.80 an ounce.
The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury slipped, pushing the yield up to 1.72% from 1.68% late Wednesday.
