The Dow got smashed today to the tune of -203.66 points (-1.57%) to close at 12,759.15. The Nasdaq, S&P 500, Russell 2000, Oil and Gold all had similar declines. Of course the Russell 2000 (and by association the PSVIX I own) was down the most, off -2.06% for the day. I am now wishing I had raised some more cash yesterday.
The Foolish Four were all down today.
The Early Gainers List were all down today.
The Dow Dogs were all down today, save for INTC, which was up +0.24%.
The Small Dogs has INTC in it too.
For the Dow 30 stocks, it was the same as the Dow Dogs and Small Dogs, with only INTC up.
Cramer’s charitable trust portfolio had ETP up.
Hot stocks today were not to be found in the DJIA.
Online jobs search firm Monster Worldwide (MWW) shares spiked after the company announced it had retained Stone Key Partners and BofA Merrill Lynch to review “strategic alternatives.”
Shuffle Master (SHFL), a gaming supplier, announced plans Monday to acquire online poker company Ongame Network. The Las Vegas-based company reported strong earnings and sales growth for the first quarter.
With stocks up 25% since last September a sell-off seems due. I think today’s DJIA decline is the worst so far in 2012.
Today’s sell-off follows sharp overnight declines in Asia and, especially, Europe, where the news has not been good for a while now.
European stocks and Asian markets both closed lower today too.
This week we also have a Jobs Report on Friday to keep the market jitters going till then.
