The Dow Market Happenings For Tuesday, March 2, 2021


There are no Dow stocks hitting 52 week highs. There are no Dow stock 52 week lows.

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open down -22 points.

Monday the Dow was up +603.14 (+1.95%) at 31,535.51.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +3.04%.

There were 28 Dow stocks up Monday.

The Dow stock winners Friday were led by Boeing (BA) 224.39 (+5.84%), Apple (AAPL) 127.79 (+5.39%), Dow (DOW) 61.54 (+3.76%) and Goldman Sachs (GS) 329.92 (+3.67%).

The Dow stock losers Friday were Merck (MRK) 72.38 (-0.33%) and Walgreens (WBA) 47.85 (-0.17%).

President Joe Biden will announce Tuesday that Merck (MRK) will help manufacture rival Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) coronavirus vaccine. In late January, Merck ended its own Covid vaccine program, citing inferior immune responses. Last month, Merck said it was in talks with governments and companies to potentially help make vaccines. Merck and J&J, both Dow stocks, are up modestly in the premarket.

Democrats’ hopes of including a $15 federal minimum wage increase in their $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill seemed all but dead, four days after the nonpartisan Senate parliamentarian said the chamber’s rules prohibited its inclusion. Senate Democrats hope to unveil their version of the House-passed package and begin debate as early as Wednesday. Congressional leaders want to send Biden the measure by March 14, when a federal jobless benefits boost, approved in December’s aid measure, is set to expire.

Senator Elizabeth Warren revived the idea of a wealth tax, which was central to her failed bid to become the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who also ran unsuccessfully for president last year advocating a wealth tax, is among the co-sponsors for the Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act. The bill, unveiled Monday, proposes a 2% annual tax on wealth ranging from $50 million to $1 billion and a 3% annual tax on wealth over $1 billion.

European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up nine-tenths of a cent at $2.729 per gallon.

Amgen (AMGN) reported earnings on 2/2/2021 after the market close of $3.81, beating estimates of $3.359 per share.

Merck (MRK) reported earnings on 2/4/2021 before the market open of $1.32, missing estimates of $1.364 per share.

Cisco (CSCO) reported earnings on 2/9/2021 after the market close of $0.79, beating estimates of $0.68 per share.

Coca Cola (KO) reported earnings on 2/10/2021 before the market open of $0.47, beating estimates of $0.414 per share.

Disney (DIS) reported earnings on 2/11/2021 after the market close of $0.32, beating estimates of -$0.448 per share.

Walmart (WMT) reported earnings on 2/18/2021 before the market open of $1.39, missing estimates calling for $1.505 per share.

Home Depot (HD) reported earnings on 2/23/2021 before the market open of $2.64, beating estimates of $2.629 per share.

Salesforce (CRM) reported earnings on 2/25/2021 after the market close of $1.04, beating estimates of $0.302 per share.

Nike (NKE) reports earnings on 3/18/2021 after the market close.
