The Dow Market Happenings For Thursday, December 31, 2020

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open down -1 point.

Wednesday the Dow was up +73.89 (+0.24%) at 30,409.56.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +6.56%.

There were 17 Dow stocks up Wednesday.

The Dow stock winners Wednesday were led by Disney (DIS) 181.17 (+2.18%), Dow (DOW) 55.47 (+2.10%) and Caterpillar (CAT) 180.04 (+1.92%).

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Intel (INTC) 48.75 (-1.30%), Verizon (VZ) 58.14 (-1.14%) and Microsoft (MSFT) 221.68 (-1.10%).

Unemployment insurance weekly claims in the week ending December 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 787,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up by 3,000 from 803,000 to 806,000. The 4-week moving average was 836,750, an increase of 17,750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 750 from 818,250 to 819,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.6 percent for the week ending December 19, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending December 19 was 5,219,000, a decrease of 103,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 15,000 from 5,337,000 to 5,322,000. The 4-week moving average was 5,457,250, a decrease of 77,000 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 3,750 from 5,538,000 to 5,534,250. The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending December 12 was 19,563,905, a decrease of 799,841 from the previous week. There were 1,828,100 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2019.

California health officials have identified the state’s first case of a new and more infectious strain of Covid-19 that was initially discovered in the United Kingdom. The patient is a 30-year-old man in San Diego County who began showing symptoms on Sunday, county officials confirmed Wednesday.

European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up two-tenths of a cent at $2.253 per gallon.
