The Dow Market Happenings For Friday, August 28, 2020

Dow stocks hitting 52 week highs include Home Depot (HD), Microsoft (MSFT), Nike (NKE), Procter & Gamble (PG) and Walmart (WMT). There are no Dow stock 52 week lows.

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +119 points.

Thursday the Dow was up +160.35 (+0.57%) at 28,492.27.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -0.16%.

There were 20 Dow stocks up Thursday.

The Dow stock winners Thursday were led by Walmart (WMT) 136.63 (+4.54%), JPMorgan (JPM) 102.35 (+3.29%) and Travelers (TRV) 117.18 (+3.21%).

The Dow stock losers Thursday were led by Apple (AAPL) 500.04 (-1.20%), Home Depot (HD) 288.63 (-1.13%) and McDonald’s (MCD) 212.19 (-0.73%).

Coca Cola (KO) was higher in the premarket after the beverage giant announced Friday a restructuring plan, which will include voluntary job cuts. Coca Cola will offer buyouts, starting with about 4,000 workers in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico who were hired on or before Sept. 1, 2017. The company estimates that the severance program will cost $350 million to $550 million.

Walmart (WMT) and Microsoft (MSFT) might seem like an unlikely partnership to acquire TikTok’s U.S. assets, but until very recently the retailer had other plans. Walmart was originally in a consortium with Google-parent Alphabet before switching in recent days to partner with Microsoft. TikTok is set to choose between the Microsoft-Walmart offer and a bid from Oracle in the next couple of days. Earlier this month, citing national security concerns, Trump signed an executive order, requiring China-based parent ByteDance to sell or spin off its U.S. TikTok business.

Boeing (BA) has discovered two manufacturing problems, this time involving its 787 Dreamliner. The company found the issues in the plane’s fuselage and has alerted airlines operating eight affected planes to remove them from service so they can be repaired.

European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up seven-tenths of a cent at $2.234 per gallon.
