The Dow Market Happenings For Thursday, May 10, 2018

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +74 points.

Wednesday the Dow was up +182.33 (+0.75%) at 24,542.54.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -0.71%.

The Dow stock winners Wednesday were led by DowDuPont (DWDP) +2.80% and General Electric (GE) +2.45%.

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Wal-Mart (WMT) -3.13% and Disney (DIS) -1.79%.

Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims – In the week ending May 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 211,000, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised level of 211,000. The 4-week moving average was 216,000, a decrease of 5,500 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 221,500. This is the lowest level for this average since December 20, 1969 when it
was 214,500. Claims taking procedures in Puerto Rico and in the Virgin Islands have still not returned to normal. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3 percent for the week ending April 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 28 was 1,790,000, an increase of 30,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 4,000 from 1,756,000 to 1,760,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,812,500, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week’s revised average. This is the lowest level for this average since December 29, 1973 when it was 1,784,250. The previous week’s average was revised up by 1,250 from 1,833,250 to 1,834,500.

European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.8 cents at $2.844 per gallon.
