DJIA / Market Close for Thursday, February 02, 2012

The Dow closed down -11.05 (-0.09%) at 12,705.41. The Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Russell 2000 all closed up a bit.

Top Dow stock gainer was Alcoa (AA), up +2.16

Top Dow stock loser was Disney (DIS), down -1.07%.

Today, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress the economy has shown some signs of improvement recently and described the pace of the recovery as “frustratingly slow.”

The market is still looking for an official agreement on a debt-reduction plan and second bailout for Greece. It’s the same old line on a different day. Everyday. I can’t remember when it wasn’t the news.

European stocks closed moderately higher. Asian markets ended higher too.

The dollar was up against the euro and the British pound, but fell versus the Japanese yen.

Oil for March delivery slipped $1.25 cents to settle at $96.36 a barrel.

Gold futures for April delivery rose $9.80 to $1,759.30 an ounce.

The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury fell, moving the yield up to 1.85%.
