Market Close for Tuesday, January 10, 2012

The Dow closed up +69.78 (+0.56%) at 12,462.47. The Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Russell 2000 all closed up too, with the Russell 2000 beating them all with a +1.49% gain for the day.

Hot Dow stocks of the day were BAC (+5.74%), CAT (+2.95%) and UTX (+2.60%).

Loser Dow stocks were GE (-0.74%), CSCO (-0.74%) and PG (-0.47%).

The Defense Department awarded United Technologies – UTX a $194 million contract for F-35 Lightning II fighter engines.

Seven of the Dow 30 stocks closed lower today.

Jim Cramer’s charitable trust portfolio did well today, with only eight of the 34 stock portfolio closing lower.

European and Asian markets ended higher today.

The dollar fell against the euro, British pound and Japanese yen.

Oil for February delivery added 93 cents to end at $102.24 a barrel.

Gold futures for February delivery gained $23.40 to end at $1,631.50 an ounce.

The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury fell a bit, pushing the yield up to 1.97% from 1.96% late Monday.
