The twelve stock Average consisted entirely of industrial stocks published for the first time:
American Cotton Oil
American Sugar
American Tobacco
Chicago Gas
Distilling & Cattle Feeding
General Electric
Laclede Gas
National Lead
North American
Tennessee Coal &
U.S. Leather pfd.
U.S. Rubber
The first Dow Jones Industrial Average computed from this list of twelve (12) stocks was 40.94. The DJIA declined gradually during June and July and on August 8, 1896 closed at 28.48 setting the lowest point on record for the industrial average.
